HISTORY OF SAINT VOLODYMYR UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL
The Saint Volodymyr‘s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Windsor, Ontario is a living testimony of faith, sacrifice, and love for God and our people.
THE BEGINNING OF THE PARISH (1927)
The history of our parish began on January 19, 1927, when the first gathering was held at the Ukrainian National Home to establish a Ukrainian Orthodox community in Windsor.
On April 3, 1927, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Ukrainian language. This marked the spiritual birth of the parish, which initially consisted of 33 members.
EARLY STRUGGLES AND GROWTH
The early years were not easy. The community had no church building, limited resources, and a shortage of clergy.
However, through faith, unity, and sacrifice, the parish overcame these challenges and continued to grow both spiritually and as a community.

THE FIRST CHAPEL (1937)
У 1937 році громада прийняла важливе рішення — будувати власне приміщення з каплицею.
З Божою допомогою та завдяки пожертвам вірних вже того ж року було освячено першу каплицю. Це стало великим кроком у зміцненні громади.
THE FIRST CHURCH BUILDING (1947)
After years of dedication and effort, a full church building was completed in 1947.
At this time, the parish continued to grow not only spiritually but also through active community and church organizations.

EXPANSION AND DEVELOPMENT (1950s–1960)
As the parish grew, a larger church became necessary
In 1962, the site for the new cathedral was blessed, and in 1963, the new church was officially opened along with a parish hall and classrooms for educational activities.

ICONOSTASIS AND BEAUTIFICATION (1971)
In 1971, a beautiful iconostasis was installed, becoming the spiritual and visual center of the cathedral and enriching the liturgical life of the parish.

A GREAT MILESTONE (1976)
One of the most significant events in the parish’s history took place in 1976, when all debts were fully paid.
This moment, known as the “Burning of the Mortgage,” became a powerful symbol of unity, sacrifice, and God’s blessing upon the community.

CATHEDRAL STATUS
In 1970, the parish was granted cathedral status, and the church became officially known as Saint Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.

SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL LIFE
Throughout the years, the cathedral has been a center of vibrant spiritual and cultural life:
- Church choir
- Bandurist ensemble
- Youth organizations (SUMK)
- Brotherhoods and sisterhoods
- Ukrainian and Sunday schools
A special emphasis has always been placed on educating youth in faith, tradition, and love for Ukrainian heritage.
THE PRESENT DAY
Since 1977, the history of the cathedral has continued through new generations who faithfully preserve and build upon the legacy of their predecessors.
Today, the cathedral remains a spiritual, cultural, and national center for the Ukrainian community in Windsor.

With gratitude to those who laid the foundation before us, we look forward with hope, continuing their sacred work.
May God bless our cathedral and all who come here with faith and love.
