Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross
The Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross is the third Sunday of Great Lent — a special day in the life of the Orthodox Church, when the faithful venerate the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. On this day, the Cross is solemnly brought out into the center of the church for veneration, and it remains there throughout the week, strengthening the faithful in their spiritual struggle.
The middle of Great Lent is often the most difficult time for a person: our strength becomes exhausted, our zeal may weaken, and temptations can increase.

СFor this reason, the Holy Church places before us the Cross of the Lord as a source of strength, hope, and spiritual support. Gazing upon the Cross, we remember the suffering of the Savior and His sacrifice for the salvation of humanity, and we come to understand that our own difficulties are small in comparison to His love.
The origin of this Sunday dates back to the early centuries of Christianity, around the 7th century. The tradition of venerating the Cross in the middle of Lent is connected with the Church of Jerusalem, where a portion of the Precious Cross of the Lord was shown to the faithful to strengthen them in their Lenten подвиг (spiritual struggle). Over time, this благочестивая tradition spread throughout the entire Orthodox Church.
The divine services of this day are marked by special solemnity. During Matins, the clergy bring the Cross from the altar into the center of the church while singing:
“Before Thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master, and Thy holy Resurrection we glorify.” The faithful approach the Cross, bow before it, venerate it, and receive spiritual comfort and blessing.
For a Christian, the Cross is not only a sign of suffering, but above all a sign of victory — victory of life over death, of good over evil, of light over darkness. Through the Cross came the Resurrection, and therefore the veneration of the Cross is always inseparably connected with the joy of the coming Pascha.
The Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross reminds us that the path to salvation проходит through patience, humility, and love. It calls each of us to take up our own life’s cross and follow Christ with faith — not losing hope, but being strengthened in the Lord.
May the veneration of the Precious Cross become for us a source of spiritual strength, renewal of the heart, and inspiration to continue the Fast with renewed zeal, so that we may worthily meet the radiant Resurrection of Christ.
