The Orthodox Church celebrates the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, the falling asleep of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. This feast is one of the twelve great feasts of the Church and is celebrated as a joyful event, because the death of the Mother of God is understood as her passage into eternal life with her Son.
According to Church tradition, after the Ascension of Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos remained in Jerusalem, caring for the Church and encouraging the Apostles and the early Christians. At the end of her earthly life, the Archangel Gabriel announced to her that she would soon depart this world. The Apostles were miraculously gathered from different lands to be present at her repose.
The Apostles buried the body of the Theotokos in Gethsemane. According to Holy Tradition, the Apostle Thomas arrived three days later and asked to see her once more. When the tomb was opened, her body was no longer there. The Church understands this as a sign of God’s special grace toward the Mother of His Son and celebrates her Dormition with hope in the resurrection and eternal life.
The Dormition is not a feast of sorrow, but a feast of hope. The Church teaches that the Mother of God was received into the heavenly glory of her Son. Her life, from the Annunciation to her Dormition, was marked by humility, faith, and complete trust in God.
This feast reminds us that our earthly life is not the end of our existence. Through Christ, death is transformed into a passage toward eternal life. The Dormition also teaches us to entrust ourselves to God, knowing that His love is stronger than death.
As we celebrate the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, let us ask her to intercede for our families, our parish, and all those who are suffering or in need. May her example lead us to greater faith, humility, and love for Christ.
May the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos bring peace, hope, and spiritual strength to our hearts and homes.
