The Orthodox Church celebrates the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, the birth of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. This feast is the first of the twelve great feasts of the Church year and marks the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s promise of salvation.
According to Church tradition, the parents of the Virgin Mary were Saints Joachim and Anna. They were righteous and faithful, but for many years remained childless. In their old age, they continued to pray to God with humility and trust. Their prayers were answered, and God blessed them with a daughter, whom they named Mary.
The birth of the Theotokos was not an ordinary event in human history. Through her, God prepared the way for the coming of His Son into the world. Mary would become the Mother of Jesus Christ, the One through whom humanity would receive salvation.
The Nativity of the Theotokos reminds us that God’s work often begins quietly, through prayer, faithfulness, and humble obedience. The story of Joachim and Anna teaches us not to lose hope when our prayers seem unanswered. God’s timing is not always our timing, but His love and providence never abandon those who trust in Him.
This feast is also a celebration of the dignity and purpose of human life. Every person is created by God and has a place in His plan. Through the birth of the Virgin Mary, we see how God can bring hope and blessing into the world through a life offered to Him.
As we celebrate the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, let us ask her to intercede for our families, our parish, and all those who seek God’s mercy. May her example teach us humility, purity of heart, and faithful obedience to the will of God.
May the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos bring peace, hope, and joy to our hearts and homes.
