Third Sunday after Pentecost and Father’s Day
On the Third Sunday after Pentecost, the Holy Orthodox Church offers us a Gospel passage that calls our hearts away from anxiety and earthly preoccupations and directs them toward trust in God and the pursuit of His Kingdom. Our Lord Jesus Christ reminds us: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
In today’s world, people are often burdened with worries about finances, health, work, and the future. Yet Christ gently teaches us that while our earthly needs are real, they must never become the center of our lives. The birds of the air do not sow or reap, and the lilies of the field do not toil or spin, yet our Heavenly Father provides for them. How much more precious are we in His sight! True peace is found not in possessions or worldly success, but in placing God first and entrusting ourselves to His loving care.
This Sunday also provides a beautiful opportunity to reflect upon the importance of gratitude and family as we observe Father’s Day. We thank God for fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and all those men who have embraced the sacred responsibility of guiding their families in faith, love, and sacrifice. The vocation of fatherhood is not merely biological; it is a calling to reflect the love, patience, and protection of our Heavenly Father.
The Christian father is called to lead not by power or worldly authority, but by humble example. Children remember not only words but the witness of prayer, kindness, honesty, forgiveness, and faithfulness. In a world that often confuses strength with self-interest, the Gospel reveals that true strength is found in selfless love and service.
As we celebrate this day, let us give thanks for the blessings God has bestowed upon our families and renew our commitment to seek first His Kingdom. May every home become a place of prayer, peace, and mutual love, where Christ Himself is the foundation and guide.
May our Lord bless all fathers and families with health, wisdom, and steadfast faith, and may He grant us the grace to place our trust not in the passing concerns of this world, but in His eternal Kingdom.
Happy Father’s Day, and blessed Third Sunday after Pentecost!
